We currently operate five main programs , a college scholarship program targeting high-potential, underrepresented students from Essex County, NJ; , an innovative program working with diverse groups of New York City high school students to help them articulate and pursue their life purpose; , a program supporting international non-profit organizations in launching and leading high-performing networks of schools; , an online teacher training video program; , a new organization partnering with public school districts to turn around their lowest-performing schools. The TE finance team provides HR, operations and finance services to all of our programs. We're looking for entrepreneurial finance and operations experts (or enthusiasts looking to become experts) dedicated to supporting a variety of education-focused programs who are excited to join a small, scrappy team. The Team and the Role Reporting to TE's Director of Finance, the Accounting Associate will execute accounting, bookkeeping, and payroll transactions; review and reconcile employee expense and credit card reports; perform monthly closing and reconciliation tasks; ensure that all financial and accounting data is up to date and accurate at all times; maintain financial and organizational record keeping systems; and take on other related duties as required and assigned we are a start-up supporting start-ups, so new projects will always come up! The TE finance and operations team provides high-functioning finance, HR, and operations services to all of TE's programs and staff. We're looking for entrepreneurial accounting experts (or enthusiasts looking to become experts) dedicated to understanding and supporting a variety of education-focused programs who are excited to join a small, scrappy, highly motivated and creative team. This role would be ideal for someone who relishes accuracy, organization, and a high attention to detail; loves reconciling and tying data; and is eager to do so in a mission-oriented environment. Duties & Responsibilities Accounting & Bookkeeping
General bookkeeping and ensuring the accuracy of all transactional data including but not limited to: A/P, A/R, bank reconciliations, monthly closing entries Create, enter, and track A/R invoices and payments, communicate with TE programs and their partners as needed to ensure timely collection of payments Review & analyze contracts and other agreements to ensure proper recording and payment schedules Monitor online expense reimbursement system, review and enter expense reimbursement and credit card transactions accurately in the accounting system; communicate and troubleshoot with colleagues about online expense reimbursement system Support implementation of financial operations systems as needed Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information File all finance documentation, maintaining organized and secure files at all times
Support semi-monthly payroll process, preparation of allocated payroll files for import into accounting system Support onboarding of new staff into payroll system Complete quarterly payroll reconciliation to ensure accurate filing with regulatory agencies File all personnel documentation, maintaining organized and secure files at all times
Financial Reporting & Audit
Close books on a monthly basis, reconcile monthly bank and credit card statements Perform miscellaneous reconciliations as needed to ensure accuracy of all financial data Generate draft monthly reports, leveraging critical thinking skills to verify data accuracy Support audit planning and preparation of support schedules, and support audit field work Assist with preparation of tax filings to be completed by auditors
Other related duties as required and assigned we are a start-up so new projects will always come up!
BA, preferably with a quantitative or logical reasoning focus 1-4 years of accounting or finance experience, or related internship experience at a non-profit or start-up organization if you don't have specifically relevant experience, then a basic functional knowledge of accounting principles plus an enthusiasm for learning will help Proactive, pragmatic, and resourceful problem solver you enjoy trying to figure things out and when in doubt, you Google it or ask an expert!
