Overview The Office of the Dean of the Graduate School seeks to fill the position of director of graduate student professional development. The director, who also serves as an associate dean of the Graduate School, will lead the efforts of the dean's office in developing a comprehensive and integrated program of professional development offerings for all graduate students. Reporting directly to the dean and working closely with the deputy dean, the director will oversee and provide strategic vision for a new programmatic hub devoted to graduate student professional development, ensuring that its launch is successful, that its mission is well communicated, and that Princeton is identifiable as a leader in making professional development an integral part of the formal and co-curricular education that our graduate students receive. The successful candidate will initially supervise a professional staff of two and will work with faculty within graduate programs, with other senior administrative partners across campus, and with external partners (including notable alumni who are leaders in their professional fields) to grow and sustain this new center of programming excellence that enhances graduate students' educational experience by offering integrated opportunities for professional exploration and skills acquisition, thereby preparing our students to contribute their graduate-level training and expertise to a wide range of careers that would benefit from the unique preparation that doctoral work provides. The position of director is initially a four-year term position, funded through a gift. Assuming the launch of the hub is successful, the dean, with the director's support, will look to raise endowment funds for a sustained commitment. Responsibilities Expand on the dean's vision for a professional development hub that is a central student support office for all graduate students, one that ensures the sustainability of the research enterprise by preparing Ph.D. students for diverse career paths. Engage in strategic planning with academic departments, Office of Advancement (Development and Alumni Affairs), and Office of Career Services to create a blueprint for preparing Ph.D. students at Princeton to contribute their training to a range of meaningful careers that specifically draw on that training. Partner with the dean in ongoing fundraising efforts, and communicate the hub's mission and services to graduate students, faculty, campus administrative partners, and alumni and potential donors. Identify and implement programming streams that attract Ph.D. students and complement and enhance their departmental training. Propose programs to be delivered by the hub and curate and seek to expand relevant programs delivered by other campus partners. Organize and chair, at least annually, a Professional Development Summit for all campus partners working in the area of graduate student professional development. Chair regular meetings of a new faculty committee devoted to innovation and graduate student professional development. In consultation with the deputy dean and other Academic Affairs staff, work with the faculty directors of graduate studies (DGSs) and other appointed placement officers in all 42 graduate degree-granting departments on integrating professional development programmatic offerings for all students (those that wish to pursue academic positions, and those that wish to pursue nonacademic positions). In consultation with the deputy dean and senior associate dean for finance and administration, develop appropriate enrollment and funding policies and systems to support students who wish to pursue summer or term-length internship opportunities. Cultivate and sustain relationships, agreements, memoranda of understanding, and opportunities with partners, both internally and externally. Meet regularly and coordinate with campus administrative partners who also provide programming content or support. Supervise a staff, currently of two, and administer a substantial annual budget for programmatic activities, with the possibility for budget growth. Make decisions about space needs, workflows, and programming assignments. Develop clear rubrics for measuring success and impact of programmatic initiatives. Alongside other staff, take direct programming responsibility for a subset of offerings based on expertise, interest, and need. Grow offerings aimed at students in the sciences and engineering who seek to explore nonacademic opportunities. Convene larger, higher profile programs and serve as the representative of the dean at certain larger events. Assess ongoing effectiveness of programs. Represent the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School on committees, planning exercises, and other duties as assigned. Participate in annual events and programs that require the support of all members of the dean's staff, including Orientation, Hooding, and Commencement. Qualifications KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES An advanced degree, with preference given for a Ph.D. in a discipline offered at Princeton. At least five years of relevant full-time work experience, with a deep understanding of and appreciation for graduate education, and in particular for highly selective Ph.D. programs; Knowledge of current career trends and best practices in career exploration and preparation; Demonstrated success in strategic planning and plan implementation; Start-up mentality, with proven record of ability to adapt and innovate in a changing, highly creative work environment; Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and ability to apply those skills both in conveying a transformative vision and in operationalizing that vision with staff; Strong analytic and presentation skills.
