    In 2020, the UN Global Compact will mark the 20th anniversary of its founding. In recognition of the important progress made in the corporate sustainability space over the past two decades, a comprehensive communications campaign will be developed throughout the remainder of this year, in preparation for a year-long awareness and advocacy campaign beginning next January. There are simultaneously plans to develop and convene strategic events in the lead up to the next Leaders Summit in June 2020 the UN Global Compact s largest flagship convening, which intends to bring together over 1,000 sustainability professionals from around the world.

    The Consultant will report to the project manager to develop and enhance corporate communications.

    Functional Responsibilities

    The UN Global Compact Office ( GCO ) has developed a new events strategy to better position itself as the UN s front door for business engagement and the world s largest corporate sustainability initiative, including by providing enhanced support to its more than 70 Local Networks around the world. The events strategy seeks to: (1) strengthen GCO s flagship event offerings during the UN General Assembly, (2) position itself at the 20th Anniversary of the UN Global Compact and (3) ensure its programmatic and flagship events continue to advance its thematic priorities of human rights (gender), finance and climate. The Communications Analyst will be supporting the preparation of corporate communications for key UN Global Compact flagship events, specifically:

  • Leaders Summit: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the UN Global Compact (June 2020, New York)
  • SDG Business Forum, in the context of the SDG Summit during UN General Assembly Week (September 2019, New York)
  • UN Private Sector Forum, in the context of the Secretary-General s Climate Summit during UN General Assembly Week (September 2019, New York)
  • Stakeholder Management:

  • Provide support to identify key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to support communication efforts, and maintain strong working relationships with these stakeholder groups; develop and foster at least five new strategic communications partnerships with external organizations/stakeholders.
  • In coordination with the project manager, advise the client on issues that may impact the achievement of their outcomes (including issues of sustainability and post project requirements such as maintenance).
  • Delivery and Performance:

  • Enhance corporate communications for both external and internal purposes to best present the initiative s work and impact, including: speeches, talking points, global promotion initiatives, letters, briefings and website content; streamline office-wide approach to corporate communications to better reflect the CEO & Executive Director s voice and priorities; ensure the timely drafting and/or review of a minimum of five pieces of corporate communications work per week.
  • Assist in developing communications materials and related resources used to drive interest in flagship strategic events, including: the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit, the SDG Business Forum during the High-level Political Forum, and the UN Private Sector Forum during the SG s Climate Summit; ensure all key strategic events present a consistent narrative, linked closely with GCO s programmatic priorities, tools and resources, as well as its broader 2020 Global Strategy and value proposition; oversee the implementation of strategic events communications campaigns that are closely coordinated with the broader GCO communications timeline; consistently roll-out all communications projects on time as scheduled (in line with a six month advance planning cycle for all flagship events); secure a quantifiable increase in the communications impact of all flagship events, as measured against a set of standard KPIs laid out for each event.
  • Support in the development and implementation of more comprehensive communications strategies for who to engage with and how to communicate with each of these groups, with a specific view to better streamline and scale the initiative s communications impact; routinely participate as the GCO focal point in at least three communications coordination groups, leveraging the positioning of the Compact as a core strategic partner.

  • Provide substantive inputs to assist the Project Manager in the preparation of project reports and documents, ensure compliance with contractual obligations and UNOPS policies, processes and procedures.

  • Participate in the relevant Communities of Practice
  • Contribute to expertise in tools and techniques.
  • Support the compilation of lessons learned as per defined reporting format.
  • Contribute to the dissemination and sharing of best practices and lessons learned for planning and knowledge building.
  • Monitoring and Progress Controls

  • Producing and publishing corporate communications on time as scheduled and meeting quality requirements.
  • Standard KPIs set for each communication event monitored and performance against KPIs reviewed.

  • Education/Experience/Language requirements

    Education:

  • Advanced University Degree in International Management, Business Administration, Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences or a related field.
  • University Degree (bachelor s degree / first level) with a combination of 2 additional years of relevant professional experience in International Management, Business Administration, Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences or a related field may be accepted in lieu of the advance university degree.
  • Work Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years of work experience related to corporate communications, business, management, event coordination, report writing, as well as experience with other written communications.
  • Previous work experience on corporate social responsibility is desirable.
  • Language:

  • Proficiency in English is essential (full command on both spoken and written). Knowledge of other UN official languages would be desirable.
