The Global Advocacy Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a graduate or law student to intern in the New York office for the fall 2019 semester. Ideally, the candidate will be available beginning in mid-September 2019 until mid-December 2019. The student will intern closely with the UN Director and the Deputy UN Director in New York.
Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.
Responsibilities: The intern will monitor the work of the United Nations in New York, conduct desk research for various short and long-term assignments, liaise with UN officials, and contribute to building and maintaining a database of advocacy contacts. The intern will also have the opportunity to attend internal advocacy strategy meetings and external meetings with UN officials and diplomats. Qualifications: The intern must be a student for the duration of the internship term. Applicants should have a strong interest in some combination of international human rights, international relations, or social change. Applicants should demonstrate precise attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, conscientiousness about checking one s own work, a positive attitude, a proactive approach, and good judgment.
