Primary Duties
The primary role of the Sr. Environmental Specialist I is to support all EHS compliance activities across the Massachusetts Bio Operations Site, with a strong focus on environmental permit and compliance activities. This includes supporting EHS functions within manufacturing, warehouses, laboratories and offices. Maintaining EHS permits and licenses, performing required inspections and investigations, gathering and analyzing data for reports and EHS software management, providing and developing training, assembling metrics and supporting sustainability initiatives will be core responsibilities.

Responsibilities: Job Function and Description
Support and lead EHS programs such as WWT, Hazardous Waste, SPCC, NPDES, Tier 2, SARA 313 (TURP), and HazMat Transportation to ensure compliance with the latest regulations, best practices or corporate standards.
Ensure necessary environmental permits are obtained, renewed, and managed to ensure regulatory compliance.
Collect, manage, track, and maintain sustainability data and other environmental information in support of internal and corporate initiatives or reporting to State or Federal agencies. Work with and provide direction to other Takeda departments, consultants, or contractors to continuously improve data integrity.
Ensure that all EHS related incidents are reported and investigated to determine causes. Help establish and implement corrective actions and make recommendations for areas needing improvement. Track corrective actions to closure. Ability to lead complex investigations across the site.
Lead and assist with internal audit inspections related to the EHS program requirements and ISO certifications and management systems for Takeda.
Develop and deliver EHS training to all personnel as required by regulations and by Takeda standards and procedures.
Oversee EHS related third-party consultants and contractors.

Education and Experience Requirements
Essential: 5-8 years' experience in the EHS field; prior internship experience is highly desired. BS/BA required in technical discipline: Engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental studies, life science or similar field.

Desired: Professional certification and/or Master's Degree in related field desired.

Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing/laboratories or other highly regulated industry (oil & gas, pulp & paper, chemical manufacturing, steel, etc.) strongly desired. Experience with management systems, LEAN, Six Sigma methodology preferred.

Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
Provide technical guidance and mentoring to EHS staff and contractors.
Familiar with ISO 14001 and 4500 requirements.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to be resourceful and proactive to identify potential areas of non-compliance with business or facility changes and set expectations to achieve a future state of compliance.
Knowledgeable in local, state, and federal regulatory requirements as well as proposed regulatory or legislative changes at all levels.
Ability to work with all programs in Microsoft Office and software systems for EHS reporting.

Complexity and Problem Solving
Ability to solve complex problems across different functions and work without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives of assignments. May determine procedures and methods on new assignments. Ability to analyze data and forecast trends to determine state of future compliance.

Other Job Requirements

Position is located in Lexington, MA
Ability to operate a car (valid driver's license) and travel via air, rail or other means of passenger conveyance.
Travel to satellite locations required (Belmont, N. Reading, and Cambridge)
Travel to corporate EHS meetings, conferences, audits, etc. upon request
Continuous professional development by attending EHS professional organization meetings whether local or out of state
Candidate must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning and wear of protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. No make-up, jewelry, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in manufacturing work environments.
May involve occasional work in a cold, hot, high-noise, at heights, or wet environment.
Work may be required outside of the standard 8-hour workday including weekends.
Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 25 lbs. and remain standing or walking for extended periods In the performance of site inspection and compliance activities
In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions.
